1870 is Mayfair Games' version of the critically acclaimed 18XX railroad game system the trans-Mississippi Valley of Midwestern America. The board itself is actually a fairly abstract hexagonal system, with track tiles placed on top of the hexes. Players use their initial money to capitalise railroad companies, which can in turn build track, buy locomotives, and generate income. Players may engage in corporate raiding, stock manipulation, and insider trading to take advantage of their opponents and win the day. This game features national railroad buyout as well as major obstacles for railroad growth. Special play features include the ability of every player to open and operate a rail company, with the government providing loans to help and the ability to cut small towns from your route. A game is finished when the bank runs out of money and the player with the greatest personal holding wins.
