A quantum leap forward for the PLA, the Type 99 has much in common with its Western counterparts. Though based on the older Type 98, it has vastly increased capabilities in terms of both lethality and protection, approaching that of the Challenger II and M1A2 Abrams. The 125mm smoothbore gun features an autoloader, and can fire a variety of ammunition, including depleted uranium shells. This allows the Type 99 to compete on a serious level on the modern battlefield. More importantly, the Type 99 can be fielded in larger numbers than the main battle tanks of other armies, allowing the PLA to always retain their main advantage, even when deploying high technology vehicles.
